The Committee to Commemorate Old Yankee Stadium
Gate 2 Rumors Dispelled
Gate 2 Balconies Being Saved After Demolition - Click Here!
Below is a side-by-side comparison of the Gate 2. As you can see, the gate has changed very little in over 85 years.
Gate 2 was the historic gate at Old Yankee Stadium, which after the major renovations that occurred at the stadium during the mid 1970's, was the one major pieces of the stadium that is over 80% original from 1923, the year in which the "House That Ruth Built" was constructed. There were many citizens, groups, politicians, historians, sports icons, and many others, along with the Committee to Commemorate Old Yankee Stadium, that were working to save and preserve this most important piece of history. As you know, the deconstruction of old Yankee Stadium continues to this day. Unfortunately, Gate 2 was demolished on March 31, 2010. The CCOYS was petitioning the City of New York to halt deconstruction of Gate 2, and include this most important piece into the plans for the new ball fields that are to be built across the street from the new Yankee Stadium. Though we lost the battle to save Gate 2, we continue today to help make "Old Yankee Stadium Park" the most historic and beautiful park in the world. The park needs to commemorate Old Yankee Stadium in the proper manner, and the CCOYS will continue to push for this. Thanks to all who have helped in the fight to save Gate 2.
Below is evidence that the Parks Department was encouraged by the SHPO to consider reusing the stadium structure, or elements of it, for recreational use.
